Ebook About Everyone dreams of tropical escape. But what happens when you escape for too long? Imagine spending 24 hours a day with your spouse in 31 not-so-square feet . . . for years; crossing the Pacific Ocean on two gallons of fuel; and tossing spaghetti marinara around your living room, then cleaning it up while bouncing like ice in a martini shaker. Tightwads on the Loose tells the story of Wendy and Garth, lured to sea by the promise of adventure. They buy a 31-foot boat that fits their budget better than it fits Garth's large frame and set sail for an open-ended voyage, never imagining they'd be gone seven years, or cover 34,000 miles at the pace of a fast walk. They live without most “necessities” and learn that teamwork and a sense of humor matter most as they face endless "character-building opportunities." They make a long-anticipated visit to the island where Garth had been shipwrecked as a teenager, only to find it had become a penal colony. An electronic catastrophe in the Solomon Islands leaves them without navigation equipment, which forces them to trade their free-wheeling lifestyle for one that seems straight out of a '60s sitcom: jobs at a U.S. Army base in the Marshall Islands. In Asia, they dodge typhoons and ships that threaten to turn their home into kindling. Finally they endure a grueling 49-day nonstop ocean crossing. None of this prepares them for their arrival "home" to a post-9/11 America which leaves them wondering what had changed more, them or the world. Tightwads on the Loose offers a fun read to the armchair adventurer -- or anyone afflicted with wanderlust."Book Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey Review :
Although I am not an around the world class sailor, I am a coastal sailor now for 20 years out of San Francisco Bay Area. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think it was well written and some good adventure stories that appear to be spot on when it comes to sailing and sailboats. I do have to say though, this couple seemed ill prepared at tmes and very lucky to have gotten through seven years of sailing which is no easy task when it comes to all the duties for safety, maintenance, weather etc. around different oceans and world areas with their lives. My sailing experience has been some up and down west coast U.S. and Caribbean from Puerto Rico to as far south as Grenada and at times things on a boat go wrong at usually the most inconvenient times as Wendy describes in some of her chapters. I do have to say, in Chapter 13 when they were broke and had to get jobs in Kenjelien, Marshal Islands so they could get some cash for important new equipment for their boat, Wendy seemed to have a not so appreciable attitude for the U.S. having a base their and the government workers their really putting an effort in helping them get their jobs for the 2 years they were there. Without that opportunity, Wendy and Garth would have been SOL. All and all, good read, some fine stories I can believe having been in the sailing people network myself. One thing about sailing and the people that you run into as another sailor, as long as you are friendly with a nice smile, it is a network of people from every race and nation that go out of their way to help another sailor. The ocean and sailing is a common bond of all races and languages. I will read Her book over again as I usually do after a month or two and enjoy it as well as the 1st time. I used to refer to myself as someone who "sails". Now, I realize that is a little like referring to myself as someone who hikes based on my daily treks to the mailbox. This is a book about people who "really sail". It is a book about adventure, about risk taking, and about finding your edge in terms of relationships and tolerance for fear and discomfort. A book for all sailors and all those who adventure. You will not only learn something about this amazing couple, you will also learn something about yourself.
